Powder-Free and Powdered Gloves Explained
What the powder in a glove actually does, why powder-free became the default, and when powdered gloves are still requested.
What the powder does
In powdered gloves, USP grade absorbable corn starch is applied to make the glove easier to put on, particularly with slightly damp hands and during rapid, repeated donning.
How powder-free gloves solve the same problem
Powder-free gloves achieve easy donning through surface treatment instead of powder. Two methods are common: chlorination — online single chlorinated or offline double chlorinated — and polymer coating on the inner surface. Both reduce surface tack so the glove slides on without added particles.
Why powder-free became the default
Powder can transfer to surfaces, products and the working environment. In healthcare, food handling, electronics and cleanroom-adjacent work this transfer is undesirable, so powder-free became the standard specification in most professional settings and in many markets is now the expected configuration.
Where powdered gloves are still requested
Powdered configurations continue to be requested in some markets and applications, generally where rapid donning volume is high and powder transfer is not a concern for the process. Availability depends on the destination market's requirements, which should be confirmed at inquiry stage.
What this means for your order
Powder status is a configuration choice, not a quality level. Specify it explicitly in your inquiry along with material, weight and texture, and confirm what the destination market expects before committing to a bulk quantity.
