Nitrile Gloves vs Latex Gloves: Key Differences

Two different base materials

Nitrile gloves are produced from synthetic nitrile latex. Latex gloves are produced from natural rubber latex. That single difference drives almost everything else: allergen profile, elasticity, chemical behaviour and how each material feels during a long working session.

Allergen profile

Natural rubber latex contains proteins that can cause sensitivity reactions in some users. Nitrile contains none of these proteins, which is the main reason many healthcare and food handling organisations moved to nitrile as their default. Where latex is still used, the standard practice is to inform users that the product contains natural rubber latex.

Fit and feel

Latex has higher natural elasticity and generally gives a closer fit with strong tactile sensitivity. This is why it remains popular in dental and fine handling work. Modern nitrile formulations have narrowed this gap considerably, particularly in lighter glove weights.

Puncture and tear behaviour

Nitrile typically offers better puncture resistance, and a puncture in nitrile tends to propagate visibly, which makes damage easier to notice. Latex offers good tear strength and tends to stretch before failing.

Chemical contact

Nitrile provides protection from a range of common chemicals encountered in professional environments. Neither material should be treated as universally chemical resistant: for defined chemical exposure, a coated chemical resistant glove selected against the specific substance list is the correct product category.

How buyers actually choose

In practice the decision usually comes down to four questions: does the workplace require a latex-free option, does the task need maximum tactile sensitivity, what does the destination market expect in documentation, and what is the consumption volume. The answers point to one material fairly quickly.

Configuration matters more than the material label

Both materials are supplied in multiple weights, textures, colours and packing formats. A 2.7 g nitrile glove and a 3.5 g nitrile glove behave differently in the same task. When comparing suppliers, compare configurations rather than material names.
