Coating is not the same as material

A coated work glove has two components: a knitted liner that determines fit and mechanical characteristics, and a coating that determines grip and surface protection. Comparing "nitrile" against "latex" in coated gloves means comparing coatings, not the whole glove.

Nitrile coating

Nitrile coating generally performs well against oils and a range of industrial chemicals, and holds up to abrasion. It is the common choice in automotive service, mechanical maintenance, metalworking and general manufacturing where oil contact is routine.

Latex coating

Latex coating offers high elasticity and strong grip, particularly on wet or rough surfaces. It is frequently selected in construction, material handling and general assembly. Because it is natural rubber latex, the sensitivity consideration applies as it does for disposable latex gloves.

Coating level

Palm coated, three-quarter coated and fully coated configurations exist for both materials. Palm coating keeps the back of the hand breathable; full coating extends liquid protection at the cost of breathability. This decision often matters more in practice than the coating material itself.

Surface finish

Smooth, crinkle and sandy finishes change grip behaviour. Sandy finishes generally help in oily conditions; crinkle finishes are common where wet grip matters. The right finish depends on what is on the surface being handled.

Choosing between them

Ask three questions: is there routine oil contact, is latex acceptable in this workplace, and is grip needed on wet or dry surfaces. Where chemical exposure is defined rather than incidental, move the discussion to a chemical resistant configuration selected against the actual substance list.
